We don't need no "EDUCATION"

You only need to score marks they said, being first is everything in life they said. The sad state of Indian education has been pointed out in many movies and articles. It basically concentrates on the psyche of Indian parents to decide their child’s future and the future is limited to either being an engineer or a doctor. The problem though according to me lies much deeper than that, putting aside the sad state of the education system in our country; I feel the main problem lies in the fact that we have completely misunderstood what “Education” is.

A girl studying in sixth class has been topping her class since she has learnt to spell the word school. She never steps outside her house to interact with kids of her age nor does she indulge in any type of frivolous activity as she has been told all these things are just “time waste” by the elders. Firstly she wants to be a doctor, you may point out that she is after all only in sixth class, what does she know about being passionate about doing something? Is it then ok for her parents to scare the little girl to the point that she regrets thinking she ever wanted to be a doctor? Isn’t life all about doing what you wanted to? Is life only about choosing the guaranteed way to success which comes quickly and lets you get settled early in life? Secondly, the girl is now being made to learn subjects a grade higher than hers so that she can just give her exams and skip a grade and start off with the next grade immediately. The sad thing over here is the people making the decision for her are educationists and are actually proud of the decision they are making to kill the soul of a lovely innocent girl fast tracking her development in the process making her skip the joy of attending school and enjoying the learning moments which lasts forever.

Here is where education especially that in school plays a huge role. Education must be about shaping of a human personality, building character, teaching how to make decisions and make you strong enough to know how to take risks and face failures, but it has all ended up being a tool to just score high , really high in so called tests and exams and Olympiads and what not. Yes by the end of the tenth grade, this flower will bloom and all it will have to show is a few beautiful pictures of it appearing in the newspaper (read : 10th class state first, 12th class gold medalist) and accolades of how perfectly her future is shaping up but will this flower learn to face the wind , enjoy the turbulences , feel a bee sting on its petals. Will she ever learn the fact that her parents are there to help and guide her and not to decide for her? Can anything replace the beautiful bond of trust a child shares with parents by letting them decide everything. Do you want to use this and end up making the kids a zombie.

A heinous crime is being committed where the essence of education is being questioned. People are completely misunderstanding what “Getting Educated” stands for, all that is going on right now is education is given a label of just scoring ridiculously high marks and not learning and applying what you learn. Scoring high is not a crime, in fact this article is not a question against people demanding only high scores from their kids but what I want to say here is, Is scoring high and topping everything called education? You may be brilliant at what you write on paper but can you call yourself “EDUCATED”. I have often heard people tell, “Here education is just a rat-race”. No it is not unless you make it to be. Once you enjoy what you learn it is never a rat-race. You people are making it a rat-race and then complaining about it.

The same people once told me if you don’t score after a few years you will see people much less deserving than you being your boss, at that moment you will realized how wasted your life is, you will feel like a failure. I have started working now in a pretty good place doing what I was passionate about all my life. I stand out in what I do. I just concentrated on learning what I liked and doing what was required. I learnt to be really good in what I liked to do and yes I see people who are in the same field, in fact forced to be in the same field who don’t want to be there bossing over me but I never felt that pang of jealousy or sadness, when I see them I get this famous lines from scent of a woman in my mind

"There is nothing like the sight of an amputated spirit. There is... no prosthetic for that. You are executing his soul"

Even though they have the position, the respect, the money, a car, a house they don’t have that happiness. I am already more happy than them. That for me is what life is all about, happiness, hunger to do something and treating work like play. Their souls have been executed and they will never find a prosthetic to replace that.

I took the advice given to me as a guideline but in the process of learning discovered it was wrong, that is what education all about. It is not about doing subjects a grade higher by putting immense pressure on you, it is not about having to score by rote learning and then vomiting on paper; it is not about doing things that turn life into a rat race, it is not just about learning the things that will help shape your career. It is also about learning more about what you love, it is also about learning to build character, integrity, facing the crossroads of life, questioning and discovering what life is.

This is an appeal not to misconstrue what education is, don’t let those kids amputate their spirit. Don’t throw them into a vicious cycle of over-performance at the cost of actual learning, let them enjoy what they discover, give them time. Life is not a rat race unless you make it so for them. Let them enjoy their childhood because they will never get it back. At the end of the day remember a naturally ripened mango is always tastier to those artificially ripened in a short period of time.

Beauty - A pursuit?

A mystery which has aroused curiosity over ages? A perception that has resulted in wars? A smile that has billions swooning over it? A streak of self confidence? Aesthetic to the eye? Something that does inexplicable things to that ‘oh so sensitive organ’ you call heart? What is beauty?

Go to a mall, ask a 17 year old guy he would say”Yo dude! For me it’s that sexy girl in a mini skirt, look at her curves man”, a teenage girl may say “It’s like that thing like you feel comfortable like in your skin” (pardon the excessive use of 'like', but that’s how teenage girls speak nowadays)…

For that tribe in the southern tip of India it must be the number of piercings on the face, for the Japanese it is how small the feet are, for a particular tribe that I saw on discovery channel it must be the number of neck rings accommodated, in this modern world the previous two instances of beauty could be portrayed as mutilation and cruelty but for those people it is beauty. For my two year old cousin it is that BARBIE’s hair which is beautiful, for me it’s the ‘oh so sexy’ Mila Kunis and for my dad it’s that girl with oiled hair in a neat cotton sari and a self assuring smile.

So do u see something common until now which can define beauty, exactly! The answer is ‘NO’. Somerset Maugham once beautifully said, “Beauty is an ecstasy; it is as simple as hunger. There is really nothing to be said about it. It is like the perfume of a rose: you can smell it and that is all”. There is no perfect definition of beauty, but what is beautiful is the pursuit of the definition of “BEAUTY”. Beauty is something which makes your heart skip a beat.. What we think about it doesn't matter, in fact beauty doesn't let u think...BAMM!! and there u see it's effect. This pursuit takes us on an exciting journey of discovery of what pleases the eye and what pleases the heart and is there something that appeals to both.

You will never see a Jassi (from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin) endorse a premium beauty brand, what you will see is no less than a Mona Singh (Jassi in real life), but then the protagonist of the serial tells she is beautiful and I can bet that majority of viewers found Jassi more beautiful than Mona Singh.

That’s how contrasting beauty is, people who are a little imperfect in appearance yet interesting with a sense of humor and exude self confidence always exude beauty, some may call it inner beauty, but what the hell, beauty inner or outer is beauty, and this beauty comes out with success, independence and lack of insecurity. On the other hand, people with that perfect nose and body, yet completely dumb or masking themselves in mountains of make-up due to insecurities fail to impress the eye or the heart; interestingly here it is the person who takes the beating not the definition of beauty.

Does that tiny crease or that pimple on your face make you feel less beautiful, that wrinkle, that aging sign or any physical mark for that matter. It does help to have a flawless skin and that perfect white teeth smile it makes you more comfortable in your skin, but at the end of the day like everything else in life it’s all about the “BHEJA” of yours. How do you take that progression in age, gracefully or depressingly, use the products available without hesitation you deserve it, feel good about yourself that is the first step you can take towards getting beautiful.

At the end of the day each and everyone is beautiful, it’s when and how you realize it and are able to portray it, beauty is just an abstract feeling which can never be defined, the 17 year olds in the beginning of the article were right ,so was my cousin, so is the owner of the multinational beauty company who takes only leggy sexy actresses, no one is wrong and as I realize at the end of this short sweet journey I took to define beauty, it is still undefined and I sign off with this wonderful quote

“Beauty is no quality in things themselves. It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.” – David Hume

Crossroads?

That feeling, yes I have got that feeling where the words don’t flow out, the ideas remain unexpressed filling the mind with angst, everything that you write or sense makes you feel mediocre, no one can help you out. What is going on? The world is ending, all that I vouched for has disappeared, what is missing here…Where is the driving force?

Motivation is the word upon which a life must thrive upon, the lack of it doesn’t let you do anything, something or the other must motivate you. As I sit on my bed thinking what is that one thing that is affecting me right now, motivating me, I come across none… nothing too inspiring, nothing to have an opinion about, yeah sure people are dying, parents are shouting ,world is moving but what is there for me here that is changing my life, nothing- college is over, not giving a rat’s ass about marks, job beckons, sitting on the bed thinking where is that one thing that led me until here? not able to find it anywhere , did I lose it somewhere in between, or is it hidden struggling to come out, it’s frustrating, I am not able to feel anything … have I become immune to my heart, where are the emotions…Can this lack of motivation turn into a motivation for living, I surely hope so…

Living just to find that missing ingredient, life is never complete just because that missing ingredient can never be found to complete the recipe. Not making an effort would not be the right way to put it. There is something wrong, nothing has changed but still that motivation has vanished into thin air, can’t feel the water trickling as I shower, going places but strangely they fail to impress me it’s the same as lying on my bed staring at a blank wall. What have I turned into, what have the people I am looking at turned into. Where is the joy of feeling the moment around you? That feeling of hope and expectations…

The same mechanical construction sound rumbling in the background, strangely reflecting the mechanical way of life… staring into the same blank hoardings in the city skyline as you ride through, the moon just a big mass of white globule which seems uninteresting, that lonely ant on its way home everyday , what is happening? Where am I? What’s going on… that lonely face by the window with something deeply sad about it, I can’t see that sadness now, have I lost something which let me perceive and feel… what did you say? How does it matter…?

A rut has been formed it has to be broken, everything that is happening is the same, the angst and frustration need to be shown, the terrace wall bears the hard punch..Aah my hand pains… I shout out through the tear laden eyes at that lonely banyan tree, I feel its smirking at my life…a hopeful screech of exasperation at the mighty sun. everything in life is not about breaking down the problem and solving it, sometimes knowing the problem becomes the solution but where did anything go wrong everything is the same as before…

This search is painful, joy of discovering it -GONE, while I move slowly towards a new phase of life, the fear of not getting all that I have seem to have lost is killing me… is it time to let go and look forward or consolidate and remain I have no idea… I want to find that something that I have lost

Why am I feeling like this? Does anyone else feel like this? Completely lost, is this what you call the “CROSSROADS”…? I need to sleep
