A.R.RAHMAN

Chinna chinna aasai (choti si aasha in hindi) introduced me to a musical genius ALLAH RAKHA RAHMAN.. as a small boy back from school refusing to eat, my mom used to sing this beautiful song every time she used to feed me… although a normal bathroom singer that she is ,the tone of the song always captivated me and made me feel good, at that time I had no idea whose song this was or anything related to it. It was just my mom singing me the best song I have ever heard… 12 years later it still remains my favorite song…

The first time I ever saw the Mozart from madras was on T.V. performing on stage with the wildly eyeball and ear grabbing SIVAMANI… This man was silently hidden behind his long locks of hair playing his keyboard… the loud sounds of percussion attracted the kid in me and I used to hate it when the camera used to move away from SIVAMANI onto this genius…but it was he who was behind the music and the tune that was captivating me from SIVAMANI’s drums …

Slowly I entered the age where I started listening and understanding the lyrics and enjoying the screen moments of the song… chinna chinna aasai was replayed and I was left speechless, the man had captured not only mine but millions of hearts worldwide… beautiful words combined with soulful music and such beautiful scenery brought tears to my eyes… this particular movie ROJA which introduced RAHMAN to the world had songs each one more soulful and enjoyable than the other…

From then on this maestro had no looking back belting out hit numbers by the dozen be it the rebellious maro maro from boys, Chitra’s voice alongwith the soulful music in yeh haseen vaadiyan, the goosebumpy roja jaaneman, the youthful fanaa from yuvaa, the simple swades, the hard hitting and motivational baar baar from lagan, the tearful ode to a son lukka chuppi in RDB, the eternally romantic songs from BOMBAY, the crazy pettairap, the sexy mayya mayya from guru, the chocolaty kabhi kabhi aditi, the songs matching thaliavaa’s personality in muthu and padayappa and many many more will leave you speechless and most of them will give you a rush of emotions, one completely different from another… this feeling itself speaks for how great his music is!!!

One thing I always look out for in his music releases is that particular song that he sings…he has a voice which remains in the head for a long time even after listening to the song million times...you can never get bored of it…. one more thing I never miss is the great LATA MANGESHKAR or K.S.CHITRA and AR RAHMAN combo they are just indescribable in words…

I am not a musical genius or a person who understands the ABC of music to describe this man as a person whose music transcends reality takes you into a world never seen… All I know is, be it lukka chuppi , yeh haseen vadiyaan, masakkali, urvasi urvasi or yeh ajnabi this man makes me cry, laugh , feel good and enjoy life just with his MUSIC…
